Students earn an average of $16 per hour and get real-world experience
PORTLAND, ME January 28, 2015 Fifteen Maine companies and organizations have committed to help strengthen the chance that today's college students will find full-time employment by hiring more than 140 paid computing and IT interns this year. Students will get real-world experience and earn a paycheck, averaging $16 per hour. The highest wage comes in at $22 per hour.
The next generation of Maine's workforce understands that real-world job experience is a necessity to stand out and get hired. The competition gets even tighter when those who are computer-savvy see Maine companies eagerly seeking college graduates to program software, develop new technologies, write applications and manage systems.
"Many of our employers treat paid internships as extended job interviews, and they want to hear directly from enthusiastic students," said Jay Collier, Program Director of Project>Login. Project>Login is a program of Educate Maine, a business-led education advocacy organization. The initiative was created by businesses that want to help students get engaged, educated and employed. "Companies make full-time job offers to more than half of their interns, according to a survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers."
About half of the available summer internships in computing and IT are already filled, but it's not too late to apply.
